Wine in Chile

Geographically, Chile is many countries in one. Its array of landscapes is so ample that manages to gather, in one territory, different climates, and lands. This unusual geography makes possible the production of excellent wines, of the most varied flavors and varieties, many of which have won major awards abroad.

When Spanish conquerors arrived in Chile in the 16th century, they brought with them vines, as thus there are records of wine production from over 400 years. Currently, more than 20 varieties of grapes are grown in the country, and Chile is one of the largest producers of wine in the world.

In recent years the elaboration of wine has focused on increasing their quality, achieving excellent results in Premium wines, in addition, many wineries have opened up to tourism and receive visitors in their vineyards.

Each region of Chile is recognized for different variety of strains and each producing valley exhibits its particular characteristics.

What to see: some Wine Routes

Maipo Valley: it is located in the heart of the Metropolitan Region and irrigated by the waters of the river Maipo. Recognized as the grand valley for production of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is world renown. Surrounded by mountains, it produces strains at different heights, obtaining various characteristics and flavors. One of the most important wineries here are Santa Rita and Concha y Toro.

Casablanca Valley: located in the Region of Valparaiso at just one hour from Santiago, and known for producing great white wines, refreshing and spicy. Its name was taken from the town of Casablanca, from here stretches the route of the wine in Casablanca, which brings together major wineries such as Casas del Bosque, Bodegas Re, Indomita, Emiliana, Veramonte, Viñamar, among others. In addition to samplings and wine tasting, there are excellent dining alternatives and exclusive accommodations.

Aconcagua Valley: near the capital, it lies between the cities of San Felipe and Los Andes, its soil bathed by the waters of the Aconcagua River and its vineyards are slow maturing. The area is ideal for going on hikes, climbing hills, horseback riding, among others. Some outstanding wine cellars are Viña Errázuriz, Viña San Esteban, Viña Von Siebenthal, Viña Agustinos, Viña El Almendral, among others.

Colchagua Valley: the first to establish a wine route with excellent services and infrastructure. Recognized worldwide as one of the most interesting routes for wine lovers. Little more than two hours from Santiago, this valley is bathed by the waters of the Tinguiririca River. It has over twenty wineries especially red wines, highlighted are the Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Syrah strains. Its main tourist center is in the city of Santa Cruz, which offers several hotels, casinos, a wonderful museum and several restaurants.
